Exporting tracks for mixing

exporting the single tracks

When delivering tracks for mixing please bounce out all individual tracks from your projects starting in the same position. You can easily bounce out all single tracks simultaneously with any DAW.

The audio files should be bounced as lossless files (wav or aiff) with a bit depth of 24bit and the sample rate at which the session has been recorded to.

Before bouncing the tracks out go through all the audio channels and turn off all your processing in order to bounce out dry stems. If there are some tracks using creative effects which you particularly like and you would like to keep please bounce out a wet stem of the track before turning off the processing and deliver it with the dry files. (This includes tracks with creative side-chain processing and tracks with effects automation)

Once your effects are turned off take a look at how the projects plays. If all the tracks have a consistent level and do not exceed the 0dB mark once the processing is turned off you can now proceed with the bounce. If you have any of the above problems find out its cause and increase or decrease the volume of ALL tracks to solve it. By doing this make sure that you leave any volume automations activated.

labeling your tracks

Make sure you label your tracks in a clear and understandable way. This will save lots of time and extra communication to happen before the mix can start.

Here’s an example:

  • Instrument_Type_Number (f.e. Guitar Chorus 1, Vocal Verse 3)

  • Instrument_Group (Drums Group, Background Vox Group)

  • FX_Type_Number (FX Plate 1, FX Tape Delay 1/8)

Make sure you write the essential infos of the Audio track in the track name, for example if a vocal is the lead or if it’s a 5th harmony and so on.

When you bounce out the tracks there is no need to add the name of the song in front of the track name. This will have to be deleted to avoid clutter in the session and will again take up time. The Tracks should look like this “Guitar Chorus 1” and NOT like this “Song ABC_Guitar Chorus 1). Please name the folder where you put all your audio stems with the complete track name and with the b.p.m. number.

If you have done a rough mix which in your opinion give a good insight about how you want the track to sound then please include it in the package. You can also send songs by other artists to be taken as references for the mix. You can do this either by sending files or streaming links.

If you follow the guidelines above the stem list for your track should look something like this:

Turnaround and Mix Delivery

TURNAROUND

Once the files for mixing are delivered and the payment agreements are met you can plan a turnaround on your mix of 1 week for single songs, 2 weeks for EP’s up to 5 tracks and a maximum of 4 weeks for LP’s with more than 5 tracks.

DELIVERABLES

The mix will be delivered as a stereo file in lossless format, ready for mastering. Any further exports such as Instrumental versions, acapella versions or any export of single files will have to be requested and agreed upon in advance.

Revisions

Two mix revisions are included in the price for every track. Any further revision has to be agreed upon.

When you receive your mix, take your time to listen to it very carefully on good quality speakers/headphones that you possibly know well. Take detailed notes of anything you would like to have changed with the exact song time where it happens. Send your listed revision notes per mail, in order to be used in the following session as a to-do list. If additionally you would like to discuss about your mix don’t hesitate to call us to discuss the revisions list.

Although not always possible, a quick response to the delivered mix is highly appreciated and recommended for a good outcome of the mix!

In fact when mixing with outboard gear, the exact settings of your mix will be on the machines at the very time of the mix export. If the feedback arrives quickly (typically within 1 day) the settings can remain on the machines. If instead it takes longer the settings will have to be saved to make space for another session and recalled when working on your revision. Besides being time consuming this practice will not ensure a 100% replica of the mix.

Assisting a mix session

The main part of the mix is always carried out by the engineer on its own. Artists and producers are welcome to join the mixing session in its final stages in order to fine tune the mix and print it together. Please be aware that if you assist the session, therefore approving the mix on the spot, you won’t be entitled to any free revisions afterwards.
